Natural habitats
Is isolated from a wide range of mammals, birds, fish, water-dwelling, reptiles and amphibians.
Clinical significance
Human P. shigelloides infections are associated with living in or travel to tropical countries and / or a history of seafood consumption; both acute diarrhea and chronic diarrhea episodes of > 2 weeks have been reported.
Most of the infections are self-limited.
Gram negative rods,
0.3-1.0 x 0.6-6.0 µm
Facultative anaerobic
BA: colonies are about 1.5 mm, gray, shiny, smooth, opaque, center may be slightly elevated and non-hemolytic
McConkey: growth, non lactose fermenter
