The generic name Rahnella was given to honor the German-American bacteriologist Otto Rahn, and the species name aquatilis was selected because the organism is usually isolated from water.

Natural habitats
As the name implies, they are ubiquitous in the environment, especially water, it is a water-dweller. Is also on food (meat, fresh water, fish and dairy products) plants, human and animal feces.
Clinical significance
Isolated from immunocompromised human patients, blood, sputum, wound, burn infections and bacteremia.
Gram negative rods,
0.5-0.7 x 2-3 µm.
Facultative anaerobic
BA: colonies are gray, smooth and no pigment.
Grow slower than other Enterobacteriaceae
